Visitation of Rennington, Northumberland

A visitation is an inspection by an ecclesiastical officer, usually a bishop or an archdeacon, of the district he controls. It should not be confused with a "heralds' visitation" which was concerned with heraldic and armigerous affairs. Canon law required an official, usually a bishop or archdeacon, to visit his diocese every three years, but this instruction was frequently ignored. The clergy and churchwardens of a parish or chapelry were summoned to appear and were asked to produce names of parishioners guilty of moral failings and other illegal actions, so that punishment could if necessary be awarded. Surviving records will usually be with the diocesan archives but notes may, in some instances, have been made in the parish papers of relevant matters.

The details below are taken from the transcript of the Rock & Rennington register at Newcastle Library, a fiche of which is available from Northfiche.
