Northumberland Record Office
Have you ever wondered whether the County
Record Office might hold some documents about your ancestors? Of
course you have, but unless you live locally, it is not always
easy to find out just what there is. Parish Registers and
Censuses are well known and well used but they form only a small
part of the vast quantity of archives.
Now, with the kind permission of Northumberland County Record
Office and Northumberland County Council, some of the catalogues
and indexes at Northumberland Record Office are available on
microfiche. Using them, you might well uncover something to
interest you, allowing your research to be widened into new
areas. In most cases, the Record Office will be able to supply
copies of the documents listed in the catalogues. Notes that the
south-eastern parts of the pre-1974 County of Northumberland
including Newcastle, are now in Tyne and Wear and records for
these areas will usually not be held at Northumberland Record
Office.
| Schools | |
| Log books, Attendance Registers, Minutes of Meetings etc. many from mid to late 19th century, from schools now within the County Education Service, might include information about your ancestor's school days. Catalogue of the Record Office holdings (which does not include names of pupils included on the documents). | £7.75 |

This is an alphabetical list to over 11,000 names giving map references, perhaps enabling you to locate an ancestor and precisely where he lived. The maps are held at NCRO. | £7.25 |
| Index to Reports of Inquests in the Alnwick Mercury 1865-1880 | |
| Chronological index, compiled by Northumberland Record Office, of the reports of inquests (mainly but not wholly in North Northumberland) which appeared in the pages of the Alnwick Mercury. The Coroners Records for this period have not been traced, and in their absence, newspapers are likely to be the principal source of information about sudden deaths. | £2.75 |

| Memorials of Alnwick Parish Church | |
| Between 1872 and 1882, the monthly 'Alnwick Journal' published a series of articles giving what appear to be the complete inscriptions on many of the tombstones and other memorials in the church and churchyard at Alnwick Parish Church (St Michael). The series is of particular interest as it gives, in most cases, extra biographical detail (sometimes considerable) about the people and families named, apparently from the personal knowledge of the anonymous author. The microfiche were prepared from photocopies of the articles and an index to the surnames on the stones has been added. It may be a little difficult to read in places. | £3.50 |
| Gosforth Epitaphs | |
| Typed indexed list compiled in 1904 of over 530 inscriptions. | £3.50 |
| Monumental Inscriptions in Newcastle General Cemetery (Jesmond) to 1916 | |
| This cemetery was opened in 1836, and this typed transcript was made in 1917/18. There are details of the full inscription on 2516 stones, but augmented in very many cases by extra biographical notes, either typed or in manuscript, added by the transcriber from newspapers or other sources, including his own personal knowledge (one dead Surveyor of Taxes is described as being "a member of the Newcastle Chess Club; he could made more noise in drinking a cup of tea than any man I have met" !). There are many thousands of names, often of family members who died elsewhere. It is fully indexed. | £14.00 |
| Monumental Inscriptions in Newcastle Westgate Cemetery to 1916 | |
| The tombstone inscriptions in this large and now overgrown cemetery were transcribed by Edwin Dodds in 1916. The first burials there were in 1829. There are 510 stones, with an alphabetical index and in some cases notes from local newspapers etc. Pedigrees of some notable local families (Hamilton, Waldie, Mackenzie, Sample, Losh) are included. The fiche have been made from a film of a photocopy of the original volume held at Newcastle Central Library. | £4.75 |
