Bishopwearmouth Marriages
1754-1812, transcribed in 1910 by Herbert Maxwell Wood.
This covers Volumes VI & VII of the parish registers
(marriages 1754-1798 and 1798-1812 respectively). The
marriages of this large parish have already been indexed
by the late Mr W E Rounce from the 16th century to 1837,
but this transcript is in a form which usually gives more
information e.g. names of witnesses. "Jan 19th
1777 John Jefferson & Elizabeth Pearson, both of this
parish by Banns by T Birkett, curate; witnesses Thos
Pearson, Jos Garthwaite."
At the end of each section, there is a list of the Banns
called at Bishopwearmouth where the marriage did not take
place there, and in many cases, the transcriber has given
details of the actual date and place of the marriage.
There are place indexes, but no name indexes. 3 fiche
Chester-le-Street Marriages 1582-1827. Unindexed H M Wood transcript. Gives more detail e.g. witnesses than the existing "Rounce Index". The ink on the original pages has faded and the fiche pages are faint in places, but readable. 4 fiche
Durham Cathedral Baptisms, marriages and burials 1609-1896, published 1896 by the Harleian Society. Fully indexed with copious notes about individuals and their families. An interesting sidelight is the absence of marriages between 1754 and 1883. Following Hardwickes Marriage Act of 1754, marriages could only take place in a licensed church. The cathedral never bothered to apply for one! One exception in 1836 under a license from Archbishop of Canterbury. 211 pages on 4 fiche.
Durham St Margaret Marriages 1558-1812. This is Volume IX of the publications of the now defunct Durham & Northumberland Parish Register Society, published in 1904. Place and names indexes included. 3 fiche
Durham St Nicholas Marriages 1540-1812. Vol XXXII of Durham & Northumberland Parish Register Society, 1918. Indexed, includes banns 1754-1812. 3 fiche
Durham City St Oswald This is a reproduction of a volume published in Durham in 1891 entitled "The Parish Registers of St Oswald's, Durham containing the Baptisms, Marriages and Burials from 1538 to 1751", edited by the then vicar, the Rev A W Headlam. The 283 pages are supplemented by a full name index. This is the only register of this parish available to be microfiched. 5 fiche
Egglescliffe Baptisms, Marriages & Burials 1540-1812. The transcript for this south east Durham parish (referred to as Eaglescliffe) covers four volumes of the registers and is partly by H M Wood and partly in another hand. As is normal in Durham and Northumberland parishes, following an edict by Bishop Shute Barrington, the entries from 1798 are especially informative, as for example in the Baptismal entry from 1805 for Robert Spence "born July 15th 1800, baptised January 13th 1805, fifth son of Edward Spence, husbandman, native of Winston by his wife Margaret Buckton, native of Skelton in Cleveland". This transcript is unindexed. 3 fiche
Embleton This is a small County Durham chapelry in Sedgefield parish. Registers transcribed 1914 by HM Wood. There are considerable periods where there are no entries. Actually included are baptisms 1650-1662, 1712-1760; marriages 1653-1662, 1696, 1715-1753 and burials 1654-1661, 1714-1734, 1737, 1741, 1744, 1747-1751, 1753-1760. All Embleton entries after 1760 are in the Sedgefield registers. 1 fiche
Gainford Baptisms 1560-1784, marriages 1569-1812, burials 1569-1784. In 1889 and 1890, volume I of the Gainford register, including baptisms 1560-1784, marriages 1569-1761 and burials 1569-1784 was arranged into alphabetical index format and published in three parts. This fiche includes all three parts and also a manuscript, again in alphabetical format, of the marriages 1754 to 1812 transcribed by H M Wood. Although described as "indexes", these works appear to include all the detail in the register e.g. parentage of children baptised, parishes of origin of couples marrying etc. 7 fiche
Hurworth Some of the registers of this south Durham parish were transcribed in 1911 by WH Bramwell and this is a fiche copy of his typed, unindexed transcript. Covers baptisms 1561-1799, marriages 1559-1812 and burials 1559-1799. Much of the early years is in Latin. 4 fiche
Lanchester Marriages 1560-1837 but with a gap 1602-1652. Typed unindexed transcript compiled in 1915. Marriages appear on Rounce index. 3 fiche
Medomsley Baptisms, Marriages & Burials 1608-1730. This is a typed unindexed transcript of Volume 1 of the registers of this parish in north-west Durham, copied from a transcript made by J W Fawcett, who collated the entries with a duplicate volume (now volume 2) made in 1727. At the end of the volume, there are some "footnotes from J W Fawcett's transcript". This is the only transcript for this parish available at Newcastle Library. 1 fiche
Middleton-in-Teesdale 1578-1736. This is a manuscript H M Wood transcript of Volumes I & II of the registers, with an index to Vol I only. There are considerable "gaps". The items actually included are baptisms 1578-87, 1617-21, 1623-1629/30, 1632/3-1645, 1653-81, 1735-6; marriages 1621-1634, 1654-1667, 1670/1-1680/1, 1735-6; burials 1653-1680/1, 1735-6. This is the only Wood transcript for this parish held by Newcastle Library and will be the only one available in fiche form. 1 fiche.
Satley Baptisms, marriages and burials 1560-1812. A printed volume, published 1914, compiled by J W Fawcett. It includes not only a transcript of the Satley register itself, but also Satley baptisms, marriages and burials from the Lanchester registers, and a complete listing of the gravestone inscriptions in Satley church and churchyard at June 1913. There is quite a lot of ancillary detail about the people mentioned, added by the editor, and detailed pedigrees of the local families of Darnell, Fawcett, Greenwell, Jopling, Rippon, Sanderson, Scarth, Taylor and White. A comprehensive index concludes this valuable work. 4 fiche
South Shields The
earlier fiche cover baptisms and burials from 1683 only
and marriages were only included in "Rounce
Indexes". Fiche are now available for baptisms and
burials 1653-1683 and marriages for whole period to 1812.
Births/Baptisms 1653-1683 Unindexed manuscript,
early 20th century. Script is very easy to read, but many
of the pages are torn or otherwise damaged and contain
many alterations and corrections. 4 fiche
Burials 1653-1684 In same hand as Baptisms, but in
a much better condition. Unindexed manuscript. 2 fiche
Marriages 1653-1731 Mainly in same hand as above.
Unindexed manuscript. 2 fiche
Marriages 1732-1812 Unindexed, compiled in 1918 by
H M Wood, also includes Banns called at S Shields
1754-1812 of couples not married there. 3 fiche
Sunderland Parish
created in 1719 out of Bishopwearmouth parish.
HM Wood's indexed transcript of marriages registers
1719-1812. Each of two sets is divided into a number of
sections, corresponding with the registers and there are
indexes to each part. Faint in parts.
M 1719-1780 2 fiche
M 1761-1812 6 fiche
There is a Rounce index of these marriages.
Washington Marriages 1603-1812. Unindexed manuscript transcript by HM Wood of a parish whose marriages are already included on a "Rounce Index" fiche. 1 fiche
Whickham Production of
fiche of HM Wood's transcript of this important Tyneside
parish has proved difficult, as the transcript volumes at
Newcastle Library are not in good condition, and have
been very tightly rebound in the past, making some dates
faint or obscure on the left margins of some pages.
Baptisms 1576-1756 This is a reproduction of a
printed book published in 1909, transcribed and
indexed by H M Wood. 7 fiche
Baptisms 1756-1772 This single fiche runs from the
end of the printed volume above to 1772, and completes
the coverage of baptisms for this parish to 1812. This is
a part of a manuscript transcript by H M Wood. The
transcript volume is not in a good state and has been
tightly rebound, resulting in a loss of some detail on
the left margin on a handful of pages, and a faint
reproduction on others.
Baptisms 1820-1845. Unindexed. Includes baptisms
at Whickham, Swalwell, Lowhand, Fellside & Dunston.
In many cases, the date of birth as well as baptism of
the child is shown and there are several "late
baptisms", e.g. an 1825 baptism of a child born in
1809!
Burial Registers transcribed by H M Wood.
Unindexed. Note that the original volumes are not in
particularly good condition; they have been tightly
bound, with consequent difficulty in reading detail at
left edge of a few pages, and they are faint in places. A
slight loss of one or two entries due to torn pages.
Burials 1576-1695
Burials 1696-1773
Burials 1773-1797
Burials 1798-1812
Burials 1813-1837
Burials 1837-1864
Burials 1865-1896
Witton-le-Wear A manuscript unindexed transcript made by HM Wood from an earlier transcript of parts of the registers. Included are baptisms and burials from 1558 to 1757 and marriages 1558-1756 (the marriages are already on a Rounce index). No later years available. 2 fiche
Earsdon
The two sets below are compiled from the 1905 transcript
by H M Wood held at Newcastle Library. Because of the
unsatisfactory state of the transcript volumes, I
hesitated about preparing fiche - the volumes are tightly
bound at the left margins, making filming difficult, and
many of the pages are in a faded ink, especially on the
1645 - 1763 set. However, several customers have asked
about them, so here they are, warts and all! Both sets
are in manuscript and are unindexed.
Earsdon CMB 1589 to 1648
Earsdon CMB 1645 to 1763
Haydon (A chapelry
of Warden Parish) Baptisms, marriages and burials to
1812, epitaphs and a separate index. This is a typed
volume of 800 pages, compiled in 1908 by J W Robinson
& E Dodds. Due to the relatively small pages there
are rather a lot of fiche, and five different sets have
been prepared.
Baptisms 1654-1812 (with "gaps" 1664/5-May
1677, also none recorded 1679-1681) 5 fiche
Marriages 1655-1812 (with "gaps" 1663-88,
1689-95, 1754-1788) 1 fiche
Burials 1654-1812 ("gaps" Nov 1665 to Apr 1683)
3 fiche
Epitaphs 2 fiche
Index. A composite index to the above 4 parts. 2 fiche
Hexham Marriages 1709-1752. This is an unindexed transcript compiled in 1908 by HM Wood.
Kirkhaugh CMB 1760-1824. The registers of Kirkhaugh, in south west Northumberland, were destroyed by fire in 1898. The Bishops Transcripts for this parish run from 1760 to 1844 and this is a typed transcript of them for 1760 to 1824 with some gaps but with an index and including tombstone inscriptions. 2 fiche
Knaresdale Baptisms and burials 1695-1812 and marriages 1701-1812. This is a typed transcript of the registers of this south-west Northumberland parish, made by J W Robinson in 1910, with an index and an alphabetical list of gravestones. It is supplemented by a short historical preface, and details of some notes found in the registers, such as lists of householders liable to pay Tithe. There are only 13 or 14 entries on each page, and 8 fiche have been needed - rather more than usual for a parish of this relatively small population.
Longframlington Volume I of the registers of this mid-Northumberland chapelry (in Felton parish) was transcribed by H M Wood and includes baptisms 1653 to 1717, marriages 1685 to 1717 and burials 1684 to 1717. There is an index. This is the only Longframlington transcript held by Newcastle Library and available for reproduction on microfiche. 1 fiche
Newcastle St Andrew Marriages 1785-1812. To some extent, this duplicates an existing set of fiche (covering CMB 1741-1797). However, more detail is given in many entries on this set e.g. the parishes of the spouses. This set also includes Banns of Marriage called at St Andrew where the marriage did not take place there, for the years 1803-23. There are indexes also. This is a typescript transcript, compiled in 1909. 3 fiche
Newcastle Non Conformist
Chapels This is a reproduction of a
Newcastle Library volume which includes the following :
Pandon Bank Unitarian Baptist. Births 1779 to 1816. Two
pages transcribed by H M Wood
Hanover Square Chapel, Unitarian. Baptisms 1781 to 1844.
Transcribed by H M Wood "Extracts from the Old
Chapel Registers belonging to the Groat Market Meeting
House - commencing 1710". A few pages, apparently
transcribed in 1847. There are three pages of
miscellaneous information, one of which gives the number
of baptisms each year from 1726 to 1742; four pages of
"extracts" of baptisms - it is clear that not
all baptisms are included here; two pages of
miscellaneous information from the "second
volume"; eight pages of "extracts" of
births & baptisms 1742 to 1835. No index. Order as
Pandon Bank fiche
St John Lee Baptisms, marriages & burials 1664-1812 for this parish just north of Hexham (noted in LDS records as Lee St John). An unindexed manuscript transcript, made by H M Wood in 1909, with some mid-18th century entries transcribed by someone else. 4 fiche
Shotley Baptisms
1675-1812, marriages 1670-1814, burials 1690-1812, with
an index. This is a typescript transcript compiled by H R
Leighton in 1910, which also includes some Dissenters
births 1740-1793 and banns from 1814-1818. This book has
been very tightly bound so some of the words at the left
margin may not be too easy to read. In my opinion,
however, all are decipherable, as they are in a clear
typescript and not more than one letter on each line is
affected. 7 fiche
Garrigill (A chapelry of Alston Parish) A typed transcript by J W Robinson and E Dodds, compiled in 1908. Covers baptisms, marriages and burials 1730-1812, with a plan of the churchyard and a list of the epitaphs. Indexed. 4 fiche
Redwing Independent Chapel and Alston Moor Independent Chapel Some of the registers of these two Independent chapels in Alston parish were transcribed by J W Robinson and E Dodds in 1909. Their work includes Redwing baptisms 1763-1815, Redwing burials 1782-1855, Alston Moor burials 1821-1858 and Alston Moor and Redwing baptisms 1815-1830. The epitaphs in both churchyards are included, and there are name and place indexes. 5 fiche.
Newcastle, Westgate Cemetery Epitaphs The tombstone inscriptions in this large and now overgrown Newcastle cemetery were transcribed by Edwin Dodds in 1916. The first burials there were in 1829. There are 510 stones, with an alphabetical index and in some cases notes from local newspapers etc. Pedigrees of some notable local families (Hamilton, Waldie, Mackenzie, Sample, Losh) are included. The fiche have been made from a film of a photocopy of the original volume held at Newcastle Central Library. 3 fiche
